ABSTRACT

An overview of traditional and contemporary energy systems is given in this chapter, with a focus on the expanding need for efficient and clean alternatives on a global scale. Electrochemical energy systems are now essential technology for achieving sustainable energy production and reducing dependency on fossil fuels. Batteries, fuel cells, and electrolyzers are examples of important applications that introduce the concepts of electrochemical conversion. Microbial electrochemical technologies, such as microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells, which use electroactive microorganisms to produce hydrogen or electricity from organic substrates, are given special attention. They are highlighted as promising solutions in the changing energy landscape by discussing their mechanisms, benefits, and potential contributions to wastewater treatment and bioenergy production.
