ABSTRACT

The various uses of microbial electrochemical cells (MECs) in re source recovery and environmental remediation are highlighted in this chapter. By removing organic pollutants, heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceutical residues while producing electricity or hydrogen, MECs offer an energy-efficient substitute for traditional wastewater treatment. Contaminants can be reduced, oxidized, or changed into less dangerous forms through microbial metabolism and bioelectrochemical reactions. The chapter also describes how MECs provide opportunities for circular resource use by facilitating the recovery of valuable materials like copper, selenium, and nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen. Additionally, microbial electrosynthesis supports more comprehensive decarbonization strategies by enabling the synthesis of chemicals and fuels from carbon dioxide. Because of these features, MECs are seen as promising instruments for bioresource recovery and sustainable wastewater management.
